Organic Matter: a soil management tool
The balance of the soil system is crucial for the success of any farmer. This balance results from the interaction between various factors, such as soil type, the carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio, the quantity and diversity of microorganisms, the organic matter content, and crop nutrition.
“Today we know that organic matter is not just a one-time corrective. It is a true soil management tool,” emphasizes Berto Correia.
For many years, the application of organic matter was mainly seen as a response to visible symptoms of soil degradation. Currently, the paradigm is different: diagnosing, planning, and continuing interventions has become essential.
The goal is clear: to build productive, resilient, and biologically active soils, capable of sustaining the crop over time.
When to apply Organic Matter? The right moment makes a difference
The autumn–winter season presents itself as a particularly favorable window for the application of solid organic matter, namely solutions like the range of VS Plus Organic.
“Lower temperatures reduce the rate of mineralization and help avoid rapid carbon losses, allowing for a more progressive integration of organic matter into the soil”, explains the consultant.
In addition, the typical precipitation levels of this season facilitate the physical incorporation of organic matter, promoting contact between organic residues, mineral matrix, and soil colloids. This set of conditions creates a favorable environment for a more homogeneous start of microbial activity and the formation of more stable carbon fractions.
How to intervene? Diagnosis before the decision
Any effective strategy for applying organic matter should start with soil analyses. These guide the decision and avoid inappropriate interventions.
Berto states that “parameters such as soil type, existing organic matter content, C/N ratio, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and exchange bases are fundamental to decide how and with what objective to intervene”.

Liquid organic matters play a complementary role to solid solutions, being fundamental to stimulate the biological activity of the soil.
“Products such as Organ Blu Plus, Xilamin or Humileo are recommended to enhance the effects of solid organic matter and activate biological processes in the soil”, explains the consultant.
By providing already decomposed organic matter, these solutions have high levels of humic and fulvic acids, highly reactive compounds that intervene in nutrient complexation and in stimulating microbiology, promoting mineralization and the progressive availability of nutrients.
